HN Metrology Consulting
Welcome, I am Henrik S. Nielsen. I own and operate HN Metrology Consulting, Inc. This web site contains information about my professional areas of expertise and how I can help you and your company within those areas.
In addition to this core consulting business, I am also involed in two other specific businesses: HN Proficiency Testing, Inc. and the Institute for Geometrical Product Specifications.
HN Proficiency Testing
HN Proficiency Testing offers professional proficiency testing services for calibration laboratores and dimensional inspection laboratories. The service is aimed at accredited laboratories in the United States and is designed to help them comply with the proficiency testing requirements associated with maintaining accreditation. HN Proficiency Testing has operated since 2001 and has been accredited since 2002.
The following link will take you to the HN Proficiency Testing Website.
Institute for Geometrical Product Specifications
Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) is the language used to specify requirements to the geometry of workpieces. In the United States this is usually referred to as Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing, GD&T. In the rest of the world Geometrical Tolerancing is the most common term.
I started the Institute for Geometrical Product Specifications in collaboration with Dr. Per Bennich in 2004. We are working on developing a whole series of literature and training courses on geometrical product specifications in several languages.
We believe that a common understanding of GPS and a consistent philosophy for applying and interpreting GPS amongs companies and their subcontractors around the world is the key to successful outsourcing and survival in the manufacturing industry.
The following link will take you to the Institute for Geometrical Product Specifications website.
Consulting Services
You can use me as a consultant within the my areas of expertise, which are outlined in the Services section.
Expert Witness
I have worked as an expert witness in connection with litigation on a couple of occations. If you are here looking for a technical expert, my resume may help you decide whether I have the credentials you are looking for.
ISO 17025 Model Quality System
I have developed a Model Quality Manual that is compatible with ISO 17025. The manual addresses all requirements of ISO 17025 and comes with an extensive collection of policies, procedure and other support documents. There are separate versions for calibration-only laboratories, testing laboratories and testing and calibration laboratories. You can either customize it yourself to the needs of your laboratory, or I can help you with the customization, as well as calibration procedures, uncertainty budgets and other documentation you will need to get accredited. As an A2LA lead calibration assessor, I have first hand experience with the steps involved in accreditation.
Training Seminars
I teach a number of training seminars on topics such as measurement uncertainty estimation, ISO 17025 and various more specific dimensional metrology related topics.
Some are offered through the Mitutoyo Institute of Metrology and all of them can be set up as an in-house for your department or a team within your company.
Metrology Insight
Metrology Insight is a periodical I used to publish when I first started out and had time on my hands. It contains short (insightful?) articles on various metrology subjects. It is available here in .pdf format.
Goodies
The goodies section contains little pieces of information and tools that I hope you will find useful.
Chris Grachanen of Compaq Computer has allowed me to post his Uncertainty Calculator freeware. You can download it from the Goodies page.
Papers
18 full papers and the abstract of a 19th are posted on this site. The full papers are here with the kind permission of the NCSL and the IDW. If you are interested in the 19th paper, I can get you a pre-print.
I am still quite proud of the paper "Determining Consensus Values in Interlaboratory Comparisons and Proficiency Testing" that won the "Best Paper on Theoretical Metrology" award at the 2003 NCSLI Workshop & Symposium.
ISO TC213
ISO Technical Committee 213 is a central organization in the ISO dimensional metrology community. It is tasked with developing standards for "Geometrical Product Specifications". I have been a member since its inception and I post news and other relevant information from ISO TC 213 on this site, as it becomes available.
Ask the Doctor
If you have a quick question, you can always ask the doctor - even if you are just looking for a second opinion. If you question is general and non-proprietary in nature, I might use it for the Q & A page.
About Me
I have been involved in the international metrology community since 1986 and I have a broad network of colleagues and contacts. You can view my resume to get an impression of my work history.
I have collected all my contact information on one page for your convenience.
Welcome,

Dr. Henrik S. Nielsen
